Spring Clinic and Auditions:

Squad Composition:
Both female and male dancers are welcome to audition.
Potential returning members must audition each year and are not guaranteed a spot on the team.
Stunting:
Cheer Team members perform stunts including extensions, liberties, cupies, toss to hands, cradles, etc.
Tumbling:
Cheer Team members will learn tumbling techniques at a near by gymnastic studio.
Motion Technique and Show Cheer:
Cheer Team members will focus on arm motions and basic dance techniques to music, along with a majority of performances that include stunting and tumbling.
Clinic and Audition Day:
- Clinics will be held on Sunday April 13, 2008 from 10:30 am- 12:30 pm in McKeon Gym.
- Auditions will be held on Sunday April 13, 2008 starting at 2:00 pm in McKeon Gym.
(Clinics and Auditions are held on the same day, an hour and a half break will separate clinics and auditions.)
- Cheerleaders are taught the fight song with pom poms (poms are lent out by the coach)
- Cheerleaders will also learn a short show cheer routine and a short cheer to demonstrate vocal technique.
- We will arrange candidates in groups of 4 to learn 2 stunts to use at auditions.
- When arriving back to McKeon Gym for auditions please be stretched and ready.
- All candidates are brought in to perform the fight song and both performance routines. Candidates will NOT be evaluated at this time, this is an opportunity for the dancers to warm up each routine as well as for the judges to become familiar with the material. Candidates will then exit the room
- Cheerleaders are introduced in groups of 4
- Each group performs the fight song with pom poms, take a minute for rest (with out leaving the room) and perform the show cheer routine, cheer and 2 stunts.
- After all of the candidates have auditioned, the cheerleaders will be brought back into the room where the judges may ask to see the fight song and/or performance routines again.
- Once auditions conclude the judging panel will begin deliberations.
- The list of the 2008-2009 Cheer Team will be posted on the gym door at the time given by the judging panel.
What to Wear:
Female Cheer Team Candidates
- Shoes - appropriate for executing cheer technique
- Tight fitting top (leotard, full-length top or sports bra) in order to see bodyline and skill positioning
- Socks (ankle socks for shorts, black socks for jazz pants)
- Stage/Game Ready makeup
- Stage/Game Ready hair
- Appropriate bras or sports bra
- No jewelry or body piercing on audition day
- No ribbons/bows
- No gum
- Overall clean, mature and collegiate presentation
Male Cheer Team Candidates
- Navy or Black pants
- Polo shirt or t-shirt without words or decals
- Dark socks
- Athletic Shoes
- No jewelry or body piercing on audition day
- No gum
- Overall clean, mature and collegiate presentation
Time Commitments
Spring and Summer:
For the rest of the spring semester the Cheer Team will meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday evenings for team conditioning.
The Cheer Team will have the majority of June and July off. We will be attending college camp. Camp is not mandatory but strongly suggested.
Fall Semester:
Fall semester rehearsal schedule will take place Tuesday, Thursday evenings 7:00pm-9:00pm and Sunday evenings 5:00pm-7:30pm.
Fall conditioning schedule will take place Wednesday evenings 6:30pm-7:30pm and Sundays 4:00pm-5:00pm
Cheer Team is asked to find an additional 2 hours during the week to maintain their individual workout, which includes cardio and weight training.
Performances:
The Cheer Team performs at various athletic, campus, alumni, media and community service events throughout the year.
The Cheer Team performs at:
- All home Men's and Women's Basketball games (timeouts and a few halftimes)
- All selected away Men's and Women's Basketball games.
- Various campus events
- Media events
- Community service events
Traveling for Jan Term is NOT an option for members of Cheer Team. The majority of our season is during the month of January.

Squad Composition:

Dance Technique:
The SMC Dance Team is expected to perform at an elite level of dancing. This includes strong dance technique, flexibility, leaps, turns and a willingness to learn. Squad members and candidates have solid double turns, leaps, and the ability to perform both jazz and hip-hop styles.
A member of the SMC Dance Team will also be familiar with cheerleading arm motions and be able to work with pom poms for sideline and spirit band performances. Tumbling is NOT required for the Dance Team.
