Steve Roberts is in his 5th season with the Gaels and is currently in his 1st year serving as Saint Mary's College Director of Baseball Operations. This is Robert's 10th season coaching under Soto's system. He also assists the Gaels in catching and outfield play.

Roberts has sent several players off to the professional level in his tenure. Former Gael Mike Sansoe was drafted in the 18th round by the San Diego Padres and led the Eugene Emeralds in stolen bases last season.

Chris Roberson, another of Roberts' former players, set the single season hit record for the Philadelphia Phillies double A Reading team in 2005. Roberson was drafted in 2001 in the 9th round as a right fielder under Roberts' tutelage.

Roberts has also made a major impact in student athletes' lives away from the field, working cohesively with the players to maximize the strength, conditioning, flexibility and nutrition program.

He has also led the way for the Gaels in the academic arena. The Gaels have improved their grades each semester since Roberts arrived on campus and the team currently holds a grade point average of 2.90. In 2003, Roberts assisted the Feather River College team in winning the Statewide Team Scholar award for the California Community Colleges (with a team grade point average of 3.47). Roberts himself is pursuing a Master in Education from Saint Mary's.

Along with his duties as Director of Baseball Operations at Saint Mary's College, Roberts is a full time Resident Director of the Junior-Senior townhouses on campus. This position allows him to mentor, tutor, and assist all SMC students.

Roberts came to the United States from Auckland, New Zealand, where he played on several national teams. Roberts has played in Japan, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, and toured the United States.

While playing on the U.S. Tour, he played at the College of Southern Idaho alongside Coach Soto. At College of Southern Idaho Roberts was an All-Conference performer and played in the Junior College World Series in 1993, after winning back to back conference titles.

Coach Robert's has a Bachelor degree in Business from Excelsior College. He is currently enrolled in the St. Mary's College Master's program. Roberts has one brother and one sister and currently resides on campus as an Associate Resident director.
