Box Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- Chalon Tietje scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting Cal Poly to a 5-4 win over Saint Mary's in a non-conference baseball game Saturday afternoon before 643 in Baggett Stadium.

Tietje opened the 10th with a double to center field. The junior right fielder moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bret Berglund. Alex Chavarria and Josh Mayo were intentionally walked to load the bases, but Justin Sloan, Saint Mary's third pitcher of the game, uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Tietje to score the winning run.

The win improved Cal Poly's record to 3-2 while Saint Maryıs fell to 0-2.

Cal Poly built a 4-1 lead with a pair of runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.

Junior left fielder Billy Saul belted a two-run home run in the fourth, his second career blast en route to a 3-for-5 day at the plate. In the sixth, Saul and Kyle Wilson singled with no outs. Saul eventually scored on a grounder by Bret Berglund while Chavarria doubled to score Berglund. Saul is hitting .458 with seven RBIs in five games.

Saint Mary's scored three in the top of the eighth to tie the game. Sam Battle's infield single scored one run. Bryan Byrne's grounder scored another and Jeff Cunningham singled to right, knocking in the third run.

Cal Poly loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth but failed to score.

Mustang senior southpaw Josh Kougl produced another strong performance on the mound and should be 2-0. Instead, he's 0-1 with no decision Saturday despite allowing just three runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. Kougl struck out four and walked two.

Last week against the University of San Diego, Kougl gave up just three runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings with no walks and four strikeouts. Cal Poly eventually lost the game, 4-1.

Saint Mary's was led offensively by second baseman Gilbert Gil with three singles in five at-bats. Designated hitter Tim Spooner added a single and double for the Gaels.

Left-hander Matt Yourkin suffered the loss, allowing four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings with four walks and four strikeouts.

Sophomore right-hander Andrew McDaniel will start for Cal Poly against Saint Mary's right-hander Kevin Trocher in Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m. in Baggett Stadium.
