Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team lost its third consecutive game to open the season on Sunday afternoon, falling to Cal Poly 4-1 at Louis Guisto Field. With the loss the Gaels drop to 0-3 on the season under first-year head coach Jedd Soto. Cal Poly improved to 4-2 on the season.

In the game the Gaels were led offensively by Mike Sansoe, who went 2-for-3, Delaney Gallagher went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Adam Callan added an RBI single.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Gaels broke a scoreless tie after Gallagher doubled to right field and Callan drove in Gallagher with an RBI single to center.

The Mustangs answered with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, with all three runs coming with two outs.

Saint Mary's had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, when they had the bases loaded with one out, but failed to score. The Gaels' Mike Harris and Sansoe led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but were left stranded.

The Gaels' starting pitcher Byran Oland, making his first career start, pitched eight innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and he struck out three batters.

Saint Mary's returns to action on Thursday, February 5, when it travels to Stockton, CA to participate in the Pacific Tournament. The Gaels will face BYU in the first game, followed by Nevada on Friday and Pacific on Saturday. Thursday's and Saturday's games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and Friday's game will begin at 2 p.m.
