Final Stats

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team (1-3) defeated the Sacramento State Hornets (3-1), 3-2, in its home opener at Louis Guisto Field on Thursday, February 6. Mike Sansoe led the Gaels offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate, including a triple and one run scored.

The Hornets led off the game with back-to-back doubles by Tim Reiner and John Acha, repectively. Reiner scored on Acha's double while Reiner scored on a throwing error to third as the Hornets led 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning the Gaels would string together a couple of hits behind Tim Spooner and Bryan Byrne. Nick Conte would later knock in Spooner on a single to left field to put the Gaels on the board. At the end of four innings, Sacramento State led 2-1.

In the fifth inning, Dane Dobrinich got the Gaels out of a jam, striking out two batters. Sansoe then started the bottom of the fifth with a triple. Gilbert Gil then scored Sansoe to tie the score at 2-2.

The Gaels would take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gil's slow roller to third scored Conte, who reached on a fielder's choice and was advanced on singles by Adam Bellows and Sansoe.

Dobrinich would pitch beautifully for the Gaels allowing four hits and no runs in 4.1 innings of work for his first victory of the season. Matt Yourkin faced one batter, which he struck out, to earn his first save of the year.

The Gaels will return to non-conference action when they host the Nevada Wolf Pack for a three-game series beginning Friday, February 14. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Louis Guisto Field.
