Box Score

Sacramento, CA - Junior Jesse Schmidt and sophomore Bret LeVier each drove in two runs to lead the Sacramento State baseball team to a 5-3 win over Saint Mary's, Friday afternoon at Hornet Field. The win gave Hornet head coach John Smith his 700th career victory. In his 25th season, Smith has recorded the most wins in program history and also owns the most wins by a coach in Sacramento State athletics history.

The Hornets ended a three-game losing streak and raised their record to 6-4 overall while the Gaels fell to 2-7 on the season.

Junior Marshall Plouffe earned his first win of the season after allowing only two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five and walking none. The Castaic, Calif., native lowered his season earned run average from 4.09 to 3.00. Schmidt led the Hornet offense with a team high three hits. Juniors Mikela Olsen and John Acha and LeVier also recorded multiple hits for the squad.

The Hornets took the early advantage in the first inning when Olsen scored senior Tim Reimer with an RBI double. Reimer began the inning by drawing a walk and then advanced to second on a balk by Matt Yourkin. Reimer then tagged to third on a deep fly to center by junior Chris Kinsey. With two outs in the inning, Olsen sent a drive into left center to score the contest's first run.

Saint Mary's evened the score on the first pitch of the fifth inning when Nick Conte led off with a towering home run to left center. The Gaels threatened to take the lead with runners on first and second with one out, but LeVier threw out Mike Harris at third on a fielder's choice to short and senior catcher Corey Watts picked off Mike Sansoe trying to steal second to end the inning.

Sacramento State made the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Schmidt hit his second home run of the season over the center field wall.

The Hornets blew the contest open in the sixth inning with three runs on five hits. With one out, Kinsey, Olsen and Acha each singled to load the bases. Schmidt then hit a ball through the left side to score Kinsey and LeVier followed with a single to left field to drive in Olsen and Acha to make it a 5-1 game.

After scoring a run in the seventh, the Gaels got an RBI single by Conte in the ninth to cut the lead to 5-3. After junior Dan Smith walked Harris to put runners on first and second with two out, junior Renicke Stelzriede entered the contest and gave up an infield hit to pinch hitter Jeff Cunningham to load the bases. Stelzriede then earned his first save of the season by getting Gilbert Gil to strike out swinging.

The Gaels will next host Sacramento State on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1:00 PM to face the Hornets in Louis Guisto Field. The two schools will end their three-game series at Hornet Field on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 1:00 PM.
