Box Score

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team jumped in front of Loyola Marymount early, scoring seven runs in the first two innings and added five more for a 12-7 victory over the Lions on Sunday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field. With the victory the Gaels won the series 2-1 and improved to 6-6 in West Coast Conference play and 11-15 overall. The Lions fell to 10-17 overall and 4-4 during conference play.

The Gaels got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Delaney Gallagher hit a two-run single to right center field, scoring Cody Nelson and Bryan Byrne. Nelson and Byrne each singled and Sam Carter was hit by a pitch, leading to Gallagher's single. Adam Bellows followed with a safety squeeze, scoring Carter from third.

Saint Mary's added four more runs in the second inning after Adam Hicks led off the rally with a double. Mike Sansoe doubled home Hicks, Nelson singled and Byrne reached on a fielder's choice. Sam Carter followed with a three-run home run to right center to break open the game, giving the Gaels a 7-0 lead.

The Lions scored three runs each in the third and fourth innings off starting pitcher Jordan Simo to cut the lead to 7-6, but that would be as close as they would get.

The Gaels added four more runs in the sixth inning, with Adam Bellows supplying the offense. Bellows doubled to left center field, scoring Gallagher, Carter and Byrne. Gallagher reached base with an RBI single earlier in the inning.

Saint Mary's then received excellent pitching from its bullpen. Corey Madden, making his first appearance of the season pitched three shut out innings, allowing one hit and striking out three batters as he picked up the victory. Chris Mezzavilla came in relief of Madden and allowed one run in two innings.

On the day the Gaels were led offensively by Cody Nelson, Bryan Byrne, Sam Carter, Delaney Gallagher and Adam Hicks, who each had multiple hit games. Nelson went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, Byrne went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, Carter went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, Gallagher went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Hicks finished 2-for-4. Adam Bellows also had four RBI on the day.

The Gaels return to action on Tuesday, April 5 when they host Bethany College at 2 p.m. Louis Guisto Field.
