Box Score

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team received nine strong innings of solid pitching by the combination of Kevin Trochez and Corey Madden, but it wasn't enough Saturday afternoon, as the Gaels fell to Gonzaga 5-1 at Louis Guisto Field. The Gaels struck first, scoring one run in the first, but failed to plate a runner over the final eight innings.

Several Gaels continued to hit the ball well, managing 10 hits, but didn't get the timely hits, stranding 12 base runners. Gonzaga scored five runs on 10 hits.

With the loss the Gaels fall to 19-29 overall and 11-18 during West Coast Conference play. Gonzaga improved to 28-20 and remain in first place in the Coast Division with a 15-10 record.

The Gaels scored in the first inning on an RBI double by Sam Carter, scoring Bryan Byrne from first base.

Gonzaga scored three runs in the second on a three-run home run by Shawn Wayt and added one run in the third and one in the fifth.

Saint Mary's pitching was solid after that. Kevin Trochez started the game and picked up the loss, but pitched six innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits. Corey Madden relieved Trochez and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one run.

Behind the pitching the Gaels defense was solid. Saint Mary's turned three double plays, while Gonzaga turned one.

On the day Mike Sansoe went 3-for-5, and seven other Gaels had one hit, with Carter providing one RBI.

The two teams wrap up their three-game series at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Louis Guisto Field.
