Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team rallied from two runs down, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, then held the Bulldogs in the ninth for a 9-8 victory on Sunday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field. On senior day and Saint Mary's final home game of the year, the Gaels also earned their 20th win of the year, the first time since the 2002 season.

With the come from behind victory, Saint Mary's improves to 20-29 overall and finishes West Coast Conference play 12-18. The Gaels wrap up the season on Tuesday, May 17 when they face the Stanford Cardinal at 6 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. Gonzaga fell to 28-21 overall and 15-11 in conference play and wrap up its season next weekend against Loyola Marymount.

Trailing 8-6 in the eighth inning with one out, Orben Frederick began the rally with a single. Bryan Byrne followed with a single to left field and after Sam Carter flew out, Delaney Gallagher hit an RBI double to left center scoring Frederick.
 

 

With two outs and the Gaels trailing 8-7 with runners on second and third, Adam Bellows delivered a clutch hit in his final home game at Louis Guisto Field. Bellows doubled down the left field line, scoring Byrne and Gallagher, giving the Gaels a 9-8 lead.

Dan Lewis shut down the Bulldogs in the ninth inning, picking up his four win of the season. Lewis pitched three innings in relief and didn't allow a run, only giving up one hit as he improved to 4-0.

Gonzaga opened the game with one run in the top of the second, but the Gaels answered with a run of their own in the bottom half. Adam Hicks had an RBI ground out as Delaney Gallagher scored the Gaels' first run.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the third inning off starting pitcher Chris Mezzavilla to take a 5-1 lead.

Saint Mary's added two runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Preston Young, scoring Ian Gordon and Hicks. The Gaels scored one in the fifth on a Gallagher solo home run.

Gonzaga had another big inning in the sixth, scoring three runs, but the Gaels answered with two in their half. Young led off with a solo home run and Sam Carter hit an RBI ground out for the Gaels' sixth run. Carter RBI was his 50th of the season.
