Moraga, CA - On day one of the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft, Mark Teahen (Yucaipa, CA), Jason Waugh (Bakersfield, CA) and Brett Wayne (Simi Valley, CA) were drafted by the Oakland A's, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers, respectively. Teahen was drafted by the Athletics with the 39th overall pick. The selection by the A's was a first round supplemental pick where Teahen was the seventh player taken by Oakland. Waugh was selected by the Blue Jays with the 326th overall pick in the 11th round and Wayne was picked up by the Dodgers with the 661st overall pick in the 22nd round.

Teahen, who was a unanimous First Team All-West Coast Conference selection in 2002, posted a WCC leading.412 batting average during his junior season. The 6'3", left hand hitter tallied 80 hits in 194 at-bats with 15 doubles, four triples, six homeruns and 36 RBI.
 

 

Teahen was one of two player on the Gaels' roster to start all 49 games of the season. During the season Teahen hit safely in 40 games and he had 32 multiple hit games. He had one four-hit game and 10 three-hit performances. Teahen led the squad in batting average, walks (30) and on-base percentage (.493), was third in the team with 45 runs scored, hits, doubles, triples and slugging percentage (.624) and was fourth in homeruns and RBI. In WCC action Teahen posted a .437 average, going 52-for-119 at the plate, scored 28 runs, had 26 RBI, 11 doubles, four homeruns and three triples.

Waugh was the Gaels' main power source during the 2002 campaign finishing with a team-high 14 homeruns. His 14 homeruns was one off the school record of 15. The right hand hitting centerfielder finished the season with a .399 batting average, finishing second on the team. He also led the team with 81 hits, 15 doubles, and five triples. He notched a team-high 18-game hitting streak during which he was 35-for-84 (.416) with 14 multiple hit games. Waugh had three four-hit games, 29 multiple hit games and he had three two homerun games. Waugh also set two single season record at Saint Mary's with 149 total bases and a .734 slugging percentage.

Wayne, a senior shortstop, finished the season with a .301 batting average to finish fifth on the team. Wayne finished the season with 27 runs scored, 19 RBI, eight doubles, three triples and two homeruns. During the 29 WCC games, Wayne posted a .385 average, hitting safely in 24 contests, with eight doubles, one triple and one homerun. Wayne also toed the rubber four times during the season to post a 1-1 record on the mound in 2.2 innings of work.

Teahen's selection as the 39th overall selection in this year's draft marks the second highest selection by a Gaels' baseball player in the last 20 years. Outfielder Mike Young was also a first round supplemental draft selection by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1980 draft.

With three players taken in the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft this is the first time in school history that three players were drafted on the first day of the amateur draft. The last time Saint Mary's had three or more players taken in a draft was following the 1991 season when five players were drafted for the Saint Mary's roster.
