Entering his seventh year as an assis­tant coach with the Saint Mary's men's basketball pro­gram is Dan Shell. In his position with Saint Mary's, Shell's duties include re­cruiting, game scheduling, player de­vel­opment, game prepa­ration, scouting, and over­seeing team aca­demics.

Before joining the SMC coaching staff, Shell served a two-year stint at Okla­homa be­fore making the move back to the West Coast. As an assis­tant with the Sooners, Shell was re­spon­sible for the day-to-day op­erations of the bas­ket­ball office as well as assisting in re­cruiting, contest sched­uling, and game scouting. In his two years at Okla­homa, the Sooners ad­vanced to the NCAA Tour­nament both years. Prior to his time in Norman, Okla­homa, Shell was an assis­tant at Pepperdine Uni­ver­sity for one sea­son where he per­formed many of the same duties.

Shell earned his bach­elor of science degree in Eco­nomics with a mi­nor in Business Ad­min­is­tration from UC Ber­ke­ley in 1998. A Kraft Schol­arship Aca­demic Achievement re­cipient, Shell be­gan his coaching ca­reer as an assis­tant coach at Sky­line High School in 1996, where he served as the jun­ior varsity head coach. During his time at UC Ber­ke­ley, Shell also cov­ered local high school sports for the Oak­land Tri­bune. Shell married Sabrina Neveu in August of 2007.
