Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's head men's basketball coach Randy Bennett announced today the signing of Mickey McConnell (Mesa, AZ). McConnell, a 6-0 point guard from Dobson High School, will join Saint Mary's for the 2007-08.

In his last two seasons at Dobson High School, McConnell helped the Mustangs post a 42-19 overall record, while leading his team to the state playoffs in 2006 and 2007. During his senior campaign, he guided his team to a 23-7 overall record while averaging 20.6 points, 7.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and 1.9 3-pointers per game.

"We're very excited to have a player of Mick's ability coming to Saint Mary's. He's displayed tremendous leadership qualities in helping his team to 42 wins over the past two years. As a coaches son, he brings outstanding basketball knowledge and instinct to the court, and we look forward to having him be part of our program."

Following his senior season, he was a Arizona First Team All-State selection and was named to the East Valley 5A Regional Team for the second year in a row. Max Preps ranked Dobson High School fourth in the state of Arizona.

During his junior year, he averaged 21 points, six rebounds and four assists per game, and led Dobson to a 19-12 record before falling in the state playoffs the Corona del Sol squad. McConnell shot 48 percent from behind the arc as a junior, and led the East Valley 5A conference in scoring, 3-point field goal percentage and assists. He was also named to the East Valley 5A All-Region team.

McConnell is also a standout shortstop on the Dobson baseball team and was an honorable mention 5A all-state team member. His father, Rick, the basketball coach at Dobson, was a member of the University of Arizona's 1976 College World Series Championship baseball team.
