Pinehurst, NC - Saint Mary's senior Mike McRae shot a 1-under par 71 in the final round of the 2008 Pinehurst Intercollegiate and finished tied for second place overall. McRae posted rounds of 71-75-71 and finished the 54-hole tournament with a score of 217 (+1) to finish one shot off the pace of medalist Set Brandon of Indiana.

The Gaels shot a final round 291 (+3), and moved up two spots to finish the tournament at The Centennial Pinehurst No. 8 in ninth place. Saint Mary's posted rounds of 309-307-291 to shot 907 (+43) overall in the 19-team field. Saint Mary's finished one shot out of seventh place and three shots behind No. 43 Wisconsin. No. 27 Indiana won the team title by 24 shots over Eastern Kentucky with an overall score of 865 (+1). No. 17 Penn State finished third with a 54-hole total of 895 (+31).

Mike McRae entered the final round at 2-over par and in fifth place. McRae shot 1-under par on Tuesday and moved into a four-way tie for second place, posting his best finish of the 2007-08 season, and his second top-5 and third top-10 finish in seven events. McRae had rounds of 71-75-71-217 at the difficult par-72, 7,035-yard golf course.

McRae was in red figures all day after making a birdie three on the first hole. His second birdie got him to 2-under on the third hole and a bogey on the fourth dropped him to 1-under. He made pars on the next six holes, before making a birdie four on the par-five second. After three more pars, he bogeyed the par-5 sixth, birdied the seventh, and closed the event with a par and a bogey.

As a team, Saint Mary's had its best day in the tournament on Tuesday, as all five players posted rounds of 75 or better. Chadd Cocco and Josh Kelley had rounds of 73, Robert McRae shot 74, and Daniel Cone had a final round 75. Cocco, Kelley, and Robert McRae all tied for 52nd overall, while Cone finished 60th overall in the 100-player field.
 

 

Saint Mary's will return to action on Wednesday, March 26 in the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Clara, CA.
