San Diego, CA - On the final day of the San Diego Crew Classic, the Saint Mary's women's rowing team had a good performance in the two varsity eight competitions. The varsity eight posted a fourth place finish in the Cal Cup, while the second varsity eight posted a second place finish in the Petite Final of the Women's Open eight and finished eighth overall out of 20 entries. The varsity eight finished fourth in the Grand Final of the Cal Cup to finish fourth overall out of 17 teams entered in the event.

After posting the fastest time in its heat on Saturday, Saint Mary's was positioned in lane one for the Grand Final of the Cal Cup on Sunday. The SMC varsity eight rowed a time of 7:26.79 to finish fourth behind UC Davis, St. Joseph's, and SUNY Buffalo. The Aggies crossed the 2K-race finish line in a time of 7:20.49, six seconds ahead of the Gaels. St. Joe's posted a time of 7:24.74 and SUNY Buffalo posted a time of 7:24.74. Behind the Gaels was Kansas State (7:28.76) and Temple (7:48.53).

The SMC varsity eight boat consisted of seven second-year rowers and just one senior. Junior coxswain Kate Shalvoy drove the rowers of senior stroke Lindsey Anderson, Michelle Grima, Sandra Pichelli, Johanna Timmer, Sierra Timmer, Jennifer Tyndall, Sunsie Haro, and Ally Oldfield

In the Women's Open Eight, Saint Mary's finished third in their heat race on Saturday to advance to the Petite Final on Sunday. In that Petite Final, Saint Mary's came in just two seconds behind a Stanford Alumni boat that crossed the line in a time of 7:29.10. The Gaels' time of 7:31.67 was more than 18 seconds faster that the time posted by the University of Miami. Colorado was fourth, UC Irvine Alumni was fifth and San Diego finished sixth with a time of 8:15.49.
 

 

In the second varsity eight boat for the Gaels was coxswain Amber Oosman, Linzey Simonson, Jennifer Morrison, Whitney Medved, Alexxa Kilby, Lexi Billo, Kristine Myhre, Kyla Tom, and Ariel Elia.
